Amman (The Brussels Morning Newspaper) – In response to an invitation from Jordanian authorities, the European Union has announced the deployment of an Election Observation Mission (EOM) to monitor the parliamentary elections scheduled for September 10. This initiative follows previous EU missions in Jordan, including those in 2013, 2016, and an Election Follow-up Mission in 2018, underscoring the EU's ongoing engagement in the region. The High Representative of the EU emphasized that the mission reflects the EU's commitment to supporting competitive, transparent, and peaceful elections in Jordan. The EOM aims to provide an independent, evidence-based assessment of the electoral process, reinforcing the EU's role as a key partner in Jordan's political modernization and democratic governance. Leading the mission is Chief Observer Ms. Željana Zovko, who expressed her honor in directing the EOM. The Core Team, consisting of 11 election experts, arrived in Amman on July 28, 2024. They will be joined by 28 long-term observers on August 5, who will monitor the election campaign across the country. Additionally, 38 short-term observers will be deployed on election day to ensure comprehensive oversight of the electoral process. The EU EOM's key objectives include producing a final report that will offer insights and recommendations for future electoral processes, which will be shared with relevant stakeholders upon the completion of the elections. This mission highlights the EU's dedication to fostering democratic practices in Jordan.
