Taiwan pledges to strengthen ties with the U.S. and Japan amid rising tensions

Taiwan has been actively strengthening its diplomatic and military ties with the United States and Japan to bolster its defenses amidst increasing pressure from China. As announced by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, Taiwan has escalated its defense budget significantly, reaching a projected US$20 billion in 2024, and increasing military spending to account for 20% of the central government’s annual budget in 2025. This increased budget demonstrates Taiwan's commitment to self-defense, aligning with U.S. priorities for stability in the region. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute recently led a delegation to Taiwan, comprising various officials and scholars to discuss shared values of democracy, economic opportunity, and peace. During their visit, discussions were held with President William Lai, Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao, and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung. The delegation emphasized the importance of exchanges between U.S. and Taiwanese leaders in addressing regional challenges and promoting security in the Taiwan Strait. Minister Lin highlighted the need for closer collaboration with like-minded partners to create resilient, democratic supply chains that are insulated from Chinese influence. He also called for Taiwan to enhance its military capabilities through timely procurement of U.S. military equipment and further research and development in drone technology. Efforts to strengthen ties with Japan were also reported, as Lin underscored the significance of enhancing maritime security cooperation and accelerating the signing of an economic partnership agreement. Taiwan's government aims to solidify its role as a pivotal partner in regional security, particularly in light of China’s growing assertiveness in the area.
