The study, which is to be presented at the eighth annual ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability and Transparency taking place in Athens, Greece, put five AI-powered chatbots to the test against established criteria for quality human therapists. Researchers discovered that the chatbots were sometimes prone to expressing stigma, particularly towards disorders like alcohol addiction and schizophrenia, as opposed to more common mental health conditions such as depression. This bias persisted even in advanced large language models, indicating that improvements in technology did not alleviate stigma. Additionally, the study included an analysis of how well chatbots handled sensitive therapy transcripts, particularly concerning dangerous thoughts like self-harm. The results were concerning; a few chatbots failed to recognize critical contexts or provide appropriate interventions when a user hinted at suicidal thoughts. Such responses highlight the limitations of AI in crisis scenarios, where a human therapist would likely act more quickly and responsibly. Experts believe that while chatbots can offer supportive roles in non-clinical tasks, they are not yet ready to fill in the crucial role of a human therapist, which necessitates nuanced understanding and empathy. Concerns regarding AI in clinical settings extend beyond mental health chatbots. A separate report from Elsevier surveyed 2,206 doctors and nurses worldwide, revealing a mix of optimism and apprehension about the growing use of AI in healthcare. Many clinicians reported skepticism regarding patient reliance on AI tools such as ChatGPT for self-diagnosis, with over half expecting that most patients would seek AI advice rather than consulting healthcare professionals. While these digital tools can assist in administrative duties and provide information, the study indicates a real need for clearer guidelines and expectations on the capabilities of AI in healthcare. Clinicians acknowledged the potential for AI to augment their work but emphasized that reliance on AI should not come at the cost of patient safety. As AI continues to evolve, it is important for healthcare providers to critically assess the role it plays and ensure that both they and their patients understand its limitations.
