First-generation college student overcomes challenges with mentorship support

OneGoal is a nonprofit organization based in Chicago that assists students from low-income backgrounds in navigating the college application and admission process. Their program starts in the junior year of high school and provides students with essential college advising, such as writing personal essays and understanding financial aid applications. As of now, around 15,000 students participate in OneGoal, with a majority being eligible for free or reduced lunch and identifying as members of racial minority groups. This initiative is particularly relevant following the Supreme Court's decision to ban affirmative action, which has intensified the challenges faced by students in this demographic. Nomar was fortunate to have the support of an adviser from OneGoal, who helped him address the bill, allowing him to shift his focus back to his studies instead of worrying about finances.
