Tomiko Itooka honored as world’s oldest person in Japan

Tomiko Itooka, born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka City, Japan, was honored as the World’s Oldest Person during a ceremony at her nursing home. This recognition came after the passing of 117-year-old María Branyas Morera from Spain. Itooka, who is also the 23rd oldest person in recorded history, became the oldest living person in Japan on December 12, 2023, following the death of Fusa Tatsumi. Yumi Yamamoto, Japan’s Research President for LongeviQuest, has been interviewing Itooka for two years and visited her to present a plaque certifying her new title. Yamamoto had previously met Itooka at her 116th birthday celebration in May. During the visit, Itooka expressed her gratitude and waved goodbye, showcasing her warm personality despite her advanced age. Throughout her life, Itooka has demonstrated remarkable resilience and strength. After marrying at 20, she raised two daughters and two sons while managing her husband’s textile factory during wartime. Following her husband’s death in 1979, she continued to live independently in Nara Prefecture, where she enjoyed activities like mountain climbing, even at the age of 100. This recognition of Itooka not only highlights her longevity but also reflects the rich history and cultural significance of aging in Japan. Her life story serves as an inspiration, showcasing the strength of women and the importance of family and community support throughout the years.
