CHICAGO (CBS) — A 17-year-old from West Chicago, Sebastian P. Kegebein, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted first-degree murder in connection with a violent attack on a 19-year-old autistic man in Kane County last year. The plea agreement was reached as part of a deal with prosecutors, who detailed the horrific nature of the assault that occurred on July 23, 2023. Emergency responders were called to a scene on Old Kirk Road, where they found the victim severely beaten and in critical condition. Prosecutors revealed that Kegebein, then 16, and 18-year-old Jacob Berrera attacked the victim without provocation, delivering hundreds of punches and kicks, and stomping on his head while he lay defenseless on the ground. Following the brutal assault, the attackers reportedly celebrated their actions, with one stating, "He's gonna die." The victim sustained life-threatening injuries, including a brain bleed, nasal fractures, and multiple contusions, leading to permanent brain damage, cognitive impairments, and seizures. The severity of the injuries has left the victim with ongoing health challenges. Under Illinois law, Kegebein is required to serve at least 85% of his sentence, although he will receive credit for the 366 days he has already spent in detention. The case highlights the serious consequences of violent behavior and the impact on vulnerable individuals in the community.
