Story

In Sweden, the authorities have charged Osama Krayem with terrorism and war crimes linked to the brutal killing of Jordanian pilot Mu’ath al-Kasasbeh. The incident occurred in early 2015 after al-Kasasbeh was captured when his F-16 fighter jet crashed in Syria in December 2014, during a mission against the Islamic State group. The pilot was shown being burned alive in a widely circulated video, aimed at pressuring Jordan, a U.S. ally, to withdraw from the coalition against IS. Krayem, 32, is an alleged member of IS who sought to fight for the group after traveling to Syria in September 2014, and has faced previous convictions for his involvement in terrorist activities in Europe. He was among 20 individuals convicted in 2022 for their part in the attacks that targeted Paris in November 2015 and has since been sentenced to life in prison by a Belgian court for terrorist murder linked to the 2016 Brussels attacks. His trial related to the execution of al-Kasasbeh is set to begin on June 4, 2025, stirring painful memories for the victim's family and ongoing discussions about justice and terrorism in Europe and the Middle East.
