Story

On a Wednesday afternoon in central Maine, a tragic series of events unfolded involving a shooting spree that resulted in multiple casualties. James Davis III, a 29-year-old man, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by his mother, Christine Smith, aged 47. While traveling on State Route 9 in Sabattus, Davis opened fire on his mother with a revolver around 4:15 p.m., fatally injuring her before exiting the vehicle. After the car came to a stop, he proceeded to shoot at passing motorists with an AK-47-style rifle. The shootings claimed the life of Katherine Williams, a 53-year-old motorist and the sole occupant of her SUV. Williams’ vehicle continued forward after being struck and ultimately crashed into a nearby home. She was found and rushed to Central Maine Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead. In addition to Williams, two other individuals were wounded during the incident. Tyson Turner, 19, and David Wilson, 35, who were driving separately in their own vehicles, became victims of Davis's random shooting. Both men were able to call 911 following the incident, and they were transported to the hospital, where they are expected to recover. Tragically, after the shootings, Davis took his own life at the scene. Authorities launched an active investigation into the crime, although they had not determined a motive prior to releasing information. Autopsies were scheduled for Davis, Smith, and Williams. During the investigation, police noted they had multiple law enforcement agencies respond to the scene, and a section of the roadway was closed to the public for a considerable period while they processed the evidence and interviewed witnesses. Following this heartbreaking event, community leaders expressed sorrow over the loss and highlighted the impact of the violence, especially noting Williams' contributions to the local school community.
