Story

During a recent inquiry hearing on August 22, Taiwanese officials underscored the pervasive issue of disinformation during elections, emphasizing the island's experience as a valuable resource for Pacific nations. Hsu, a representative from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO), announced plans to establish a workshop in Australia aimed at training journalists from Pacific island countries. This initiative will feature experts from Taiwan, Australia, and the United States, focusing on equipping journalists with the skills to discern misinformation and disinformation. Taiwan has faced significant cyber threats, with cybersecurity firm Fortinet reporting approximately 15,000 attacks per second in the first half of 2023, making it the most targeted region in the Asia-Pacific. Wu Tsunghan, an assistant research fellow at Taiwan’s Institute of National Defense and Security Research, highlighted specific instances of disinformation, including false claims about government surveillance and the alleged importation of Japanese nuclear waste. These campaigns often peak during national elections and coincide with high-profile visits by Taiwanese leaders to the U.S. The inquiry also addressed the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) interpretation of United Nations Resolution 2758, which Labor Senator Deborah O'Neill argued does not confer sovereignty over Taiwan to the People's Republic of China (PRC). O'Neill condemned any assertions to the contrary as attempts to undermine Taiwan's democratic integrity, stressing the importance of countering disinformation as a defense of truth and democracy. The collaborative efforts among free democracies to combat disinformation were praised, reinforcing the commitment to uphold democratic values in the face of misinformation campaigns.
