Drunk passenger fined £4,800 on Perth to Sydney flight

In September 2023, Wade Douglas Corbett, a 34-year-old man, exhibited intoxicated and aggressive behavior on a Jetstar flight from Perth to Sydney. After consuming a considerable amount of alcohol before and during the flight, he became disorderly, threatening both passengers and cabin crew. His refusal to comply with crew instructions, including a demand for more alcohol and a seatbelt order, escalated the situation. Eventually, he locked himself in the toilet, prompting the pilot to return the aircraft to Perth just over an hour into the flight. The return to Perth resulted in significant operational disruptions, leaving 150 passengers stranded overnight. The Australian Federal Police were called to remove Corbett from the plane upon landing. The incident not only caused inconvenience to fellow travelers but also incurred substantial costs, including the dumping of $20,000 worth of fuel to safely land the aircraft. In court, Corbett pleaded guilty to charges of disorderly behavior and failure to comply with safety instructions. He was fined AUD$9,000 and ordered to pay an additional AUD$8,630 for the fuel costs incurred due to the emergency landing.
