Much Marcle to unveil new charity art gallery in Herefordshire

Plans have been unveiled for a new art gallery, Hellens Gallery, to be located in the grounds of Hellens Manor near Much Marcle, Herefordshire. This gallery aims to house an impressive collection of paintings, including works by renowned artists such as Goya, Gainsborough, Van Dyck, and Hogarth. The Pennington-Mellor-Munthe Charity Trust, which owns the manor, seeks to provide a permanent home for these artworks, which are currently stored in Southside House, Wimbledon. The proposed gallery will not only serve as an exhibition space but will also host musical and literary events, educational outreach, and environmental programs. The design includes features like high insulation and heat pumps, ensuring sustainability and energy efficiency. The gallery's layout will allow for flexibility, with paintings mounted on sliding racks that can be stored away when the space is used for performances. The initiative aims to reunite the art collection with the estate, enhancing the cultural offerings of Hellens Manor, which is one of the oldest dwellings in England. The manor already hosts Hellensmusic, an annual classical music festival, and various concerts throughout the year, attracting international talent. Comments on the planning application are open until 19 September, allowing the community to engage with the project. This development represents a significant step in promoting the arts in Herefordshire and providing a venue for diverse cultural activities.
