A Jewish man in Brooklyn has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and hate crimes following a series of violent attacks against his Muslim neighbor. The suspect, identified as Mr. Kadosh, allegedly harassed Mr. Chebira, a 50-year-old Algerian, over several months, culminating in a brutal assault where Kadosh broke into Chebira's apartment and struck him with a mallet, causing internal bleeding. Kadosh pleaded not guilty in Kings County Criminal Court, with bail set at $25,000 cash or a $125,000 bond. In a separate incident, 22-year-old Vincent Sumpter was charged with a hate crime after allegedly stabbing a Jewish man near a synagogue in Crown Heights. The attack occurred early Saturday morning following a verbal dispute, during which Sumpter reportedly shouted "Free Palestine" before lunging at the victim with a knife. The victim, who has strong ties to the local Jewish community, was hospitalized but is expected to recover. Sumpter remains in custody with bail set at $100,000 cash or $250,000 bond. Community leaders have expressed concern over the rising tide of antisemitic violence in New York City, particularly in light of recent events. Rabbi Yaacov Behrman emphasized the seriousness of the situation, warning that hateful rhetoric can lead to real violence. The Anti-Defamation League has reported a significant increase in antisemitic incidents since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, highlighting a troubling trend in the current climate.
