Footballer Apologizes for Social Media Posts
- Yves Bissouma apologized for posting videos of himself using nitrous oxide
- The Class C drug, commonly known as laughing gas, was uploaded on Snapchat
- Bissouma faced backlash after the clips went viral on social media
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma has issued an apology following the emergence of videos showing him inhaling nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas. The clips, which were shared on Snapchat over the weekend, have raised concerns regarding the player's judgment and conduct. Bissouma, who represents Mali internationally, acknowledged his "severe lack of judgement" and is now subject to an internal investigation by the club. In a statement, Bissouma expressed regret for his actions, emphasizing his understanding of the seriousness of the situation and the associated health risks. He also highlighted his commitment to his responsibilities as a professional footballer and a role model for fans. "I want to apologise for these videos. This was a severe lack of judgment," he stated. Tottenham has confirmed that they are looking into the matter, with a club spokesman indicating that it will be handled internally. The use of nitrous oxide was classified as a Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act last November, following the UK government's anti-social behaviour action plan. While possession for recreational use is now an offence, the gas can still be legally utilized for legitimate purposes, such as in medical settings. Since joining Tottenham in 2022, Bissouma has made 56 appearances for the club, including 26 starts in the current 2023-24 season under manager Ange Postecoglou. The outcome of the investigation remains to be seen as the club deliberates on potential disciplinary actions.
