Pittsburgh forms committee to find new athletic director

The University of Pittsburgh has initiated the process of finding a new athletic director following the recent dismissal of Heather Lyke. Chancellor Joan Gabel emphasized the need for a leader who can enhance the experiences of student athletes, coaches, staff, and donors. To facilitate this search, an advisory committee has been formed, consisting of seven prominent members from the Pitt community, including notable former football players and current university officials. Among the committee members are Aaron Donald, a celebrated NFL player and All-American at Pitt, Pat Bostick, who serves as the Senior Associate Athletic Director, and Peter Varischetti, a member of Pitt's Board of Trustees. Additionally, the committee includes Pitt men's basketball coach Jeff Capel, CFO Dwayne Pinkney, former executive associate athletic director Donna Sanft, and faculty athletics representative Sheila Velez Martinez. The committee will collaborate with an executive search firm to identify suitable candidates for the athletic director position. This strategic move aims to ensure that the new leader aligns with the university's vision for its athletic programs and community engagement. While the timeline for appointing a new athletic director remains uncertain, the formation of this committee marks a significant step in the university's commitment to strengthening its athletic department and supporting its student athletes.
