Story

In December 2023, a portion of a building on West Burnside Avenue and Phelan Place in the Morris Heights section of the Bronx collapsed, miraculously resulting in no injuries but leaving numerous families homeless. An initial investigation blamed an engineer for mislabeling a critical load-bearing column as decorative. However, further investigation revealed that Arsh Landmark General Construction, the contractor responsible for the construction work, also failed to recognize significant flaws in the engineering work. The Department of Buildings issued violations against the contractor, pointing out that they should have identified the engineer's mistake early on.
