Brooklyn school honors fallen NYPD Det. Rafael Ramos

A Brooklyn school was renamed in honor of NYPD Detective Rafael Ramos, who was tragically killed in the line of duty nearly a decade ago. The ceremony took place at the newly designated Detective Rafael Ramos School, a Magnet School of Environmental Science, Technology, and Community Wellness, reflecting the community's commitment to his legacy. His widow, Maritza Ramos, expressed her emotions during the event, highlighting both her sadness and pride in the recognition of her husband's contributions to the community. The renaming ceremony also featured a police dog named 'Ralfie,' dedicated to Ramos, who serves in the counterterrorism unit. This K-9 is trained to detect various explosives, showcasing the ongoing efforts of the NYPD to ensure public safety. Officer David Frino, who works with Ralfie, emphasized the dog's role in securing large events in the city, furthering the mission of community protection that Ramos embodied. In addition to the renaming, the Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation distributed around 300 bookbags filled with toys to local children, aiming to foster positive relationships between the police and the youth. This initiative is part of a broader effort to engage young people and build trust within the community, a goal that Ramos championed during his career. Ramos had previously served as a school safety officer, inspiring many, including a child he mentored who recently became a police officer.
