Suspended AIG Shoots ICAS Officer's Son-In-Law in Court
- Suspended AIG shoots dead ICAS officer's son-in-law in court.
- The incident took place in Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab and Haryana states.
- The suspect was arrested in November last year by the Punjab vigilance bureau.
In a shocking incident on Saturday afternoon, Malwinder Singh Sidhu, a suspended Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Punjab police, fatally shot his son-in-law, Harprit Singh, an Indian Civil Account Service (ICAS) officer, in the district court complex in Chandigarh. The shooting occurred during a mediation session related to a matrimonial dispute involving Sidhu's daughter, Dr. Amitoj Kaur, who is currently residing in Canada. The incident unfolded around 1:30 PM, when Sidhu allegedly fired three shots at close range, striking Harprit in the chest and killing him instantly. Witnesses reported that the shooting took place at the mediation center, where both families had gathered for the third hearing in an ongoing divorce case. The circumstances leading to the shooting remain unclear, with conflicting accounts suggesting either Sidhu asked Harprit for directions to the washroom or vice versa. Following the gunfire, Harprit's family members rushed to the scene, and he was quickly transported to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), where he was pronounced dead. Authorities apprehended Sidhu at the scene and recovered the weapon used in the crime. This incident has raised serious concerns regarding security protocols at the court, particularly how Sidhu was able to bring a loaded firearm into the complex. Prior to this incident, Sidhu had been suspended following his arrest in November for fraud and extortion charges while serving in the Punjab police's human rights cell.
