Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh – The Tawa reservoir in the Narmadapuram district has been officially designated as a Ramsar site, marking a significant milestone for wetland conservation in India. This announcement was made on Wednesday, alongside the recognition of two bird sanctuaries in Tamil Nadu, bringing the total number of Ramsar sites in India to five, with Tawa being the fifth in Madhya Pradesh. The state previously celebrated the designation of Bhoj Wetland, Sirpur Lake, Yaswant Sagar Lake, and Sankya Sagar Lake as Ramsar sites. Union Minister for Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, expressed his excitement on social media, highlighting the addition of Tawa reservoir to the Ramsar network just ahead of India's Independence Day. He commended the efforts of both Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in achieving this recognition, which aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of fostering a harmonious relationship with nature and promoting the conservation of wetlands, referred to as "Amrit Dharohars." Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister also celebrated the designation, calling it a point of pride for both the state and the nation. He emphasized the commitment of the people of Madhya Pradesh to environmental conservation under the guidance of Prime Minister Modi. The Ramsar Convention serves as an international treaty aimed at the sustainable management and conservation of wetlands, with nearly 90% of UN member states participating as Contracting Parties.
