Promise secures investment from Google to innovate AI storytelling

In late 2023, Promise, a generative AI studio founded by YouTube veterans George Strompolos, Jamie Byrne, and filmmaker Dave Clark, made headlines by announcing a strategic investment from Google's AI Futures Fund. This funding is part of an extended seed round that includes other prominent investors such as Michael Ovtiz's Crossbeam Venture Partners and Kivu Ventures. Promise's collaboration with Google goes beyond financial backing, involving partnerships for research and development in AI technologies, early model testing, and co-marketing initiatives. As a result, the studio is granted early access to cutting-edge AI tools like Gemini and Veo. Strompolos expressed that this partnership is a natural fit, emphasizing the ambition to redefine cinematic storytelling through innovative AI tools. He highlighted that the future of film creation is not just about using existing technologies but also inventing new ones. The executives at Promise are deeply aware of the shift in the creative landscape, noting that many artists entering this space are serious filmmakers seeking authentic opportunities rather than mere influencer status. Until the establishment of Promise, there had not been a suitable platform for these creators. The studio aims to build original intellectual property (IP) in-house while also inviting outside talent for projects suitable for AI collaboration. An example of this innovative approach is the visual development project NinjaPunk, led by Dave Clark. The project merges AI-driven methodologies with traditional stunt choreography and motion capture techniques, representing a significant step in the evolution of filmmaking. The studio firmly believes in progressive and collaborative development practices, linking artists with emerging technological advancements in the field. In a bid to empower visual effects (VFX) artists and others already embedded in the industry, Promise has initiated Curious Refuge. This educational platform aims to enhance skills and ensure artists remain ahead of the industry's rapid technological changes. As of now, while NinjaPunk is still in the research and development stage, Strompolos confirmed that the studio expects to start production on its first feature-length film later this year. With a diverse upcoming slate inclusive of genres such as animation, sci-fi, horror, and fantasy, Promise is dedicated to providing higher quality productions while embracing risk and fostering a community of storytellers.
