Maharashtra SHRC criticises Palghar Collector over health risks from chemicals

The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has taken a strong stance against the Collector of Palghar due to his inaction regarding public health risks associated with the use of harmful chemicals by fruit vendors in Nallasopara. This issue came to light following a report in a regional newspaper, which detailed how vendors were using these chemicals to accelerate fruit ripening, posing significant health risks to consumers. Bhakti Choudhary, the Chief Medical Officer of the Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation, emphasized the dangers of these practices, prompting the SHRC to seek a detailed report from the Additional Municipal Commissioner (AMC). However, the response from the AMC was deemed inadequate, as it merely shifted responsibility to the Food and Drugs Administration, neglecting the Municipal Corporation's role in public health oversight. The SHRC criticized the AMC for failing to recognize the implications of these practices on public health, stating that it is the duty of the Municipal Corporation to monitor and take action against such activities. In light of the AMC's dismissive response, the SHRC expressed its dissatisfaction and allowed the AMC additional time to conduct a thorough inquiry. The commission also directed its criticism towards the Palghar Collector for not appearing before them, either in person or virtually, to address these serious concerns. The SHRC has warned the Collector that he may face prosecution for his non-compliance and has given him a final opportunity to respond to the commission's orders, indicating that failure to do so could result in legal consequences or a financial penalty.
