In 2023, Glenmorangie, a prominent Highland distillery, introduced its latest single malt, A Tale Of Spices, marking the sixth installment in its ongoing A Tale Of... series. The release is significant for being the first expression from the distillery to feature aging across four cask types. This innovation reflects a growing trend within the whisky industry to explore diverse flavor profiles through unique cask finishes. Both Director of Whisky Creation Dr. Bill Lumsden and Master Blender Gillian Macdonald played pivotal roles in developing this expression, drawing inspiration from the aromatic world of spice markets. The whisky initially matures in ex-bourbon barrels, followed by additional aging in an array of casks to achieve a complex profile. The innovative cask types include Moroccan red wine casks made from French oak, new charred oak casks, shaved and toasted red wine casks, and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. This blend opens up new opportunities for flavor exploration and illustrates the distillery's commitment to innovation. The incorporation of Moroccan red wine casks was particularly groundbreaking for Glenmorangie, providing new aromatic notes to the whisky. Upon tasting this new release, early reviewers noted the expected fruity notes of tropical fruit like papaya and guava, alongside unripe pear. However, the true highlight was the pronounced wood-forward spices that it presented, featuring hints of licorice, anise, gentian root, and a hint of Chinese five-spice powder. The palate also delivers creamy notes of vanilla and passionfruit custard while transitioning into flavors of sugar-and-spice coated cashews, sweetened green tea, and a subtle thread of matcha. At a bottling strength of 46% ABV (92 proof), A Tale Of Spices is available at a suggested retail price of $100. As part of Glenmorangie's ongoing narrative-focused series, this release not only evokes specific sensations and flavors but also reinforces the distillery's long-standing history and quality within the whisky industry. Glenmorangie is part of the Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH) portfolio, which enhances its visibility and stature in the luxury spirits market.
