Italian authorities have initiated a shipwreck and manslaughter investigation following the tragic sinking of the luxury Bayesian yacht near Sicily, which resulted in the deaths of tech mogul Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, and five others. Public prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio announced the inquiry during a press conference, emphasizing that the investigation is still in its early stages and could evolve in various directions. He described the incident as a "very grave tragedy" and highlighted the heroic efforts of firefighters and divers who assisted in recovering bodies from the wreck. The yacht sank during severe storms off the coast of Palermo, with CCTV footage capturing the vessel succumbing to the waves. Of the 22 individuals onboard, 15 were rescued, including Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares. Tragically, the body of chef Recaldo Thomas was recovered at the scene, while the remains of Lynch and his daughter were found later. The yacht was reportedly tilted, prompting passengers to seek refuge in their cabins as the situation escalated. Cartosio noted that the inquiry will focus on the circumstances surrounding the shipwreck, with investigators seeking information from survivors and crew members. The investigation aims to clarify how most of the crew managed to survive while others perished. As the inquiry progresses, authorities will coordinate with port officials regarding the retrieval of the wreck and the ongoing investigation into the incident.
