CNG stations in KP will operate at night amid winter load management concerns
- CNG supply across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was suspended during daytime under a winter load management plan.
- The decision was made after talks between the All Pakistan Compressed Natural Gas Association, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines, and government officials.
- CNG stations will operate only from 5pm to 8am, raising concerns about the industry being impacted by prolonged closures.
On January 6, 2025, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, faced challenges regarding its compressed natural gas (CNG) supply. The All Pakistan Compressed Natural Gas Association's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter decided to suspend gas supply during the day as part of a winter load management plan. Khalid Latif, the association's president for the Hazara division, stated that this decision came after successful discussions with officials from the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Company and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government. CNG stations remained closed during the daytime and were set to resume operations on Tuesday. He emphasized that the province produces 421 million standard cubic feet of gas daily yet only consumes 220 million cubic feet, indicating a surplus sent to Punjab. Latif expressed concerns about the impact of prolonged CNG station closures on local industries, referencing a similar situation in Punjab. Additionally, the Peshawar High Court had issued an order to maintain gas supply, preventing any indefinite suspension of services. The situation highlighted the significant gas production in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and how the province's rights under the Constitution should be prioritized in resource distribution, in line with Article 158.
