- These job cuts reflect the ongoing challenges faced by news media brands and the need for strategic adjustments.
Two major UK newspaper publishers, News UK and DMGT, are significantly reducing their US workforces due to financial pressures in the media sector. This decision comes as both companies announced internal restructurings in their American digital operations, with layoffs occurring simultaneously. DMGT, which operates Dailymail.com, is cutting nearly 10% of its US staff, while The Sun's reductions are reportedly more substantial, although not as high as 80%. The Sun, which launched its US edition online four years ago, has faced challenges in the rapidly changing digital landscape. A spokesperson emphasized the need to adjust their strategy and resize the team to ensure the long-term sustainability of their US operations. The company currently employs around 100 people for its US platform. DMGT's Dailymail.com, which began operations in the US in 2010, has seen a decrease in its workforce from approximately 260 employees seven years ago to about 200 now. The layoffs reflect the ongoing struggles faced by news media brands, even those with growing digital audiences. Industry analysts suggest that these job cuts are indicative of the intense pressures within the media industry, highlighting the need for adaptation in a rapidly evolving digital environment. Both companies aim to focus on areas with potential for audience growth while managing their resources more effectively.
