This summer, Penrith in Cumbria has emerged as the leading staycation destination for British tourists traveling by train, according to data from Virgin Trains Ticketing. The market town has experienced a remarkable 106 percent increase in bookings over the past six weeks, thanks to its historical attractions, including a 14th-century castle, and its proximity to the scenic Lake District, Pennines, and Eden Valley, particularly Ullswater, the second-largest lake in the national park. Following Penrith, Whitstable in Kent has seen the second-highest rise in train ticket bookings, with a 92 percent increase. Known for its famous oysters and picturesque sunsets from the Old Neptune pub on the beach, Whitstable continues to attract visitors seeking a charming seaside experience. Weston-super-Mare ranks third, with an 85 percent surge in bookings, drawing tourists to its Marine Lake beach, Grand Pier arcades, and the world's largest helicopter museum. Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, also made the list, with an 85 percent rise in ticket purchases. Tourists flock to the city for its historic castle and the vibrant Edinburgh Fringe performance arts festival held in August. Meanwhile, Penzance in Cornwall recorded a 27 percent increase in train bookings, offering easy access to stunning beaches and the renowned Minack open-air theatre. Brighton rounded out the top six, with a modest 12 percent rise in bookings, as visitors enjoy its lively promenade filled with bars and restaurants, along with the eclectic shopping experience in The Lanes.
