- These initiatives follow the heightened awareness of social justice issues since 2020.
Delta Airlines is actively pursuing a strategy to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) across all levels of the company, according to Kyra Lynn Johnson, the airline's Chief Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Social Impact Officer. Speaking at a DEI panel in February 2021, Johnson highlighted the company's efforts to reassess its language and practices, questioning the traditional use of terms like "ladies and gentlemen" in favor of more inclusive alternatives. Delta's guidelines now discourage language that implies a gender binary, reflecting a broader commitment to inclusivity. A Delta spokesperson reiterated the company's stance, emphasizing the importance of using language that acknowledges the diverse backgrounds and identities of its global customer base. This initiative is part of a larger goal to foster an environment that is not only non-racist but actively antiracist. Johnson noted that simply stating "we aren't racist" is insufficient; instead, Delta aims to embody an antiracist ethos in its operations and culture. In addition to language changes, Delta is reimagining its talent acquisition strategy to ensure intentional representation within its workforce. Johnson stated that the company is committed to examining its political action committee (PAC) spending and supporting legislation that aligns with its equity goals. This comprehensive approach aims to normalize discussions around DEI within the organization, although Johnson acknowledged that not all employees may share the same views on these initiatives.
