KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chicago Bears cornerback Douglas Coleman III was taken off the field on a stretcher during a preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night after suffering a neck injury while tackling wide receiver Cornell Powell. The incident occurred on the first play of the second half, causing Coleman to fall motionless on the field. Medical personnel from both teams quickly attended to him, and he was immobilized and transported to a local hospital. Bears head coach Matt Eberflus provided an update post-game, stating that Coleman was moving his limbs and had given a thumbs-up before being carted off. “That was good to see,” Eberflus remarked, although he noted that Coleman was being evaluated at the hospital. The Bears ultimately won the game 34-21, finishing their preseason with an undefeated record. On Friday, Eberflus confirmed that Coleman had been released from the hospital and was in good spirits while traveling back to Chicago. Coleman, 26, previously played for the Ottawa Redblacks in the Canadian Football League and was signed by the Bears in January. He had a notable college career at Texas Tech, where he was an All-Big 12 selection. The Bears are set to open their regular season against the Tennessee Titans on September 8, with Coleman competing for a roster spot in the secondary. His injury adds to a list of concerns for the team, as they also dealt with injuries to other players during the game.
