Investigation Launched into Animal Welfare Practices at C&K Meats
- Undercover footage reveals workers abusing sick pigs at a slaughterhouse supplying pork to Tesco.
- Animals found with wounds and under severe stress, triggering activists' concerns.
- The shocking mistreatment of animals raises ethical and welfare issues in food production.
C&K Meats, an abattoir endorsed by the RSPCA Assured scheme, is under scrutiny following the release of disturbing footage by the Animal Justice Project (AJP). The facility supplies pork to major retailers including Tesco, Co-op, Aldi, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Asda, and Lidl. While C&K Meats claims to prioritize animal welfare with regular veterinary inspections, the AJP's investigation suggests significant breaches of animal welfare laws. The footage reportedly shows severe stress indicators in pigs, such as frothing at the mouth and heavy panting. Ayesha Smart, a barrister specializing in animal welfare law, noted that the evidence points to "multiple and clear breaches" of statutory regulations. An AJP investigator recorded a worker at the abattoir stating, “Nothing we do for these pigs is for their benefit,” highlighting concerns about the treatment of animals at the facility. In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for C&K Meats reiterated their commitment to high animal welfare standards. Meanwhile, Tesco has stated that they take animal welfare seriously and expect all suppliers to adhere to strict welfare guidelines. Following the release of the footage, Tesco has initiated an urgent investigation into the matter. As the investigation continues, both C&K Meats and Tesco have emphasized their dedication to addressing any confirmed breaches of animal welfare standards, urging anyone with concerns to report them immediately.
