FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – New York Jets punter Thomas Morstead has announced a charitable initiative called "Punt for ALS," pledging to donate $1,000 for every punt he lands inside the opponent's 20-yard line this NFL season. The campaign is dedicated to raising awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and honors former New Orleans Saints special teams player Steve Gleason, who was recently recognized with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the ESPYS. In a statement, Morstead expressed his admiration for Gleason, highlighting his lifelong contributions to others and the importance of supporting the Team Gleason Foundation. "I’m honored and excited to dedicate my 16th season in the NFL to Steve and his foundation," Morstead said, committing to a minimum donation of $10,000. Last season, he achieved a personal best by placing 36 punts inside the 20-yard line. Morstead is also encouraging teammates, opponents, and fans to contribute to the Team Gleason Foundation, further amplifying the campaign's reach. Gleason is well-known for his pivotal role in the Saints' emotional return to New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, famously blocking a punt in a game against the Atlanta Falcons in 2006, which led to a touchdown. Gleason expressed his gratitude for Morstead's support, stating, "Gratitude is sacred," and emphasized the significance of their friendship. The collaboration aims to not only honor Gleason's legacy but also to foster awareness and support for those affected by ALS.
