Railway Workers Trained to Remove Swans from Tracks
- Network Rail is providing specialist training to workers to remove swans from train tracks.
- The training aims to avoid delays in train journeys caused by swans trespassing on the tracks.
- AI technology is also being utilized to deter deer from railway tracks.
Network Rail has announced a collaboration with The Swan Sanctuary to provide specialized training for rail workers on the safe removal of swans that trespass on railway tracks. This initiative comes in response to a reported 143 incidents involving swans on the tracks during the 2023-2024 period, placing them sixth among the top ten railway trespassers. In stark contrast, human trespassers lead the list with approximately 19,300 incidents, highlighting a significant safety concern. The training program involves hands-on experience for mobile operational managers, equipping them with the skills necessary to safely restrain and transport swans away from the tracks. Network Rail emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that it enhances the capabilities of their front-line teams in addressing the challenges posed by these birds. While swans are a notable concern, human trespassing remains the most pressing issue, occurring at a rate of one incident every half hour. Deer also pose a risk, with 349 reported incidents over the year. In an effort to mitigate these dangers, Network Rail and London North Eastern Railway are trialing artificial intelligence systems designed to deter deer from approaching railway lines. Helen Hamlin, Network Rail’s operations chief, underscored the seriousness of railway trespassing, which not only disrupts train services but also poses life-threatening risks due to the hidden dangers present on the tracks. The initiative aims to enhance safety for both wildlife and rail users alike.
