A hunter in Idaho experienced a frightening encounter with a grizzly bear while hunting elk in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest on a Sunday. The incident occurred in Island Park, a region close to Yellowstone National Park. During this unexpected encounter, the bear knocked the hunter down and bit him. Fortunately, both hunters were armed and managed to shoot the bear, which deterred the attack and ultimately resulted in the bear's death. Following the attack, the injured hunter was able to call for help, and emergency services transported him by helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. His injuries were reported as non-life-threatening, and he is currently receiving treatment. Idaho Fish and Game officials emphasized that the hunters acted in self-defense during this close-range encounter with the bear. Regional Supervisor Matt Pieron expressed gratitude that both hunters survived the ordeal and conveyed his best wishes for the injured hunter's recovery. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that hunters may face in bear-populated areas, particularly in regions like Idaho where grizzly bears are present. In light of this attack, Idaho Fish and Game is urging hunters to take precautions, such as carrying bear spray and being vigilant for fresh bear tracks. They recommend making noise while moving through areas with dense vegetation or near creeks to avoid surprising bears, as most attacks occur in such situations.
