Londonderry is set to welcome thousands of attendees for the 2024 Foyle Pride parade, marking the grand finale of a vibrant 10-day Pride festival that commenced on August 15. This year's event emphasizes the themes of diversity and inclusivity, with a strong focus on both local and global community issues. Jim Doherty, a member of the Foyle Pride committee, expressed optimism about the turnout, noting an increase in participation compared to previous years. Doherty highlighted the dual nature of the celebration, stating, “We do party in Derry as well as anybody else but the focus is always on the political.” He pointed out the significance of international issues, such as the death penalty in Uganda, underscoring the parade's role in advocating for marginalized communities worldwide. The event is designed to be a powerful statement of solidarity and support for those facing discrimination. The parade is scheduled to depart from the North West transport hub at 14:00 BST, proceeding across the Craigavon Bridge and through the city center. Local police have issued warnings about potential traffic disruptions but assured the public that officers will be present to manage the flow of vehicles during the festivities. As the festival draws to a close, a picnic will be held in memory of Mark Ashton, a prominent gay rights activist who played a crucial role in the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners group during the 1984 miners' strike, further emphasizing the event's commitment to honoring LGBTQ+ history and advocacy.
