Four Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on I-75 in Metro Detroit

A tragic wrong-way crash on I-75 in Royal Oak, Michigan, early Sunday morning resulted in the deaths of four individuals and left one critically injured. The incident occurred around 2:50 a.m. when a 29-year-old man from Oak Park drove a black Volkswagen northbound in the southbound lanes, ultimately colliding with a Dodge Caravan near 11 Mile Road. Emergency responders received multiple 911 calls about the errant driver before the crash was reported. Upon arrival, police found the Volkswagen engulfed in flames and multiple victims at the scene. The driver of the Volkswagen was pronounced dead, along with three passengers in the Caravan: a 34-year-old man from Troy, a 54-year-old man from Mexico, and a 71-year-old man from Mexico. A 31-year-old woman from Troy, the fourth occupant of the Caravan, was critically injured and has since undergone surgery; she is currently hospitalized but expected to survive. Michigan State Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, with Lt. Michael Shaw noting that wrong-way drivers often exhibit signs of impairment, medical emergencies, or distraction. He emphasized the importance of staying out of the left lane to avoid potential collisions with wrong-way drivers and urged the public to report any sightings of such vehicles immediately. The freeway was closed for approximately six hours as authorities conducted their investigation and cleared the scene, highlighting the serious nature of wrong-way driving incidents on Michigan roads.
