Morgan State student launches nonprofit for homeless young mothers in Baltimore

In Baltimore, a senior at Morgan State University, Gloria Lawrence, has established a nonprofit organization called Esi's House of Hope to support young mothers who are aging out of foster care. The initiative was inspired by Lawrence's trip to Ghana, where she learned about the significance of the name 'Esi,' which symbolizes a child becoming part of a family. Esi's House of Hope aims to provide housing and mentorship for these mothers, offering them a safe environment to grow and thrive. Since its opening in October 2023, Esi's House has successfully housed three mothers and their children at no cost. The program not only provides shelter but also focuses on career pathway support, helping the mothers pursue higher education or vocational training. Participants receive training in financial literacy and guidance on home ownership, ensuring they are equipped with essential life skills. The program has already expanded to accommodate up to 11 mothers and their children, demonstrating its effectiveness and the growing need for such support in the community. Lawrence emphasizes the importance of providing a nurturing environment where these young mothers can achieve their goals, whether they aspire to become certified nursing assistants, truck drivers, or educators.
