Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is set to showcase his acting versatility in an upcoming biopic about legendary mixed martial arts fighter Mark Kerr. While Johnson is known for his roles as a superhero and action hero, Kerr believes this film will highlight a different side of the actor. The biopic will delve into Kerr's tumultuous life, including his struggles with love and addiction, themes previously explored in his 2002 documentary, "The Smashing Machine." Kerr, now 55, expressed admiration for Johnson's willingness to take on a role that diverges from his typical blockbuster persona. He noted that many actors tend to stick to familiar roles, but Johnson's courage to embrace a more complex character is commendable. Their connection dates back to a chance meeting at Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach over two decades ago, where they first discussed the potential for a film about Kerr's life. In November 2019, Johnson reached out to Kerr after watching his documentary, expressing a desire to bring his story to the big screen. After a lengthy period of communication, they confirmed that the project was moving forward. Benny Safdie, known for his role in "Oppenheimer," has acquired the rights to produce the film, further solidifying the project’s potential. Kerr remarked on the physical similarities between himself and Johnson, noting that the actor's current build mirrors his own when he entered the UFC. The collaboration promises to be an exciting venture for both men, as they aim to tell a compelling story of resilience and transformation.
