Jeffries: Voters Can Stop Election Certification Issues by Choosing Democrats
- Hakeem Jeffries suggests Democrats winning majority can prevent election certification problems.
- If Republicans remain in power, there's a risk of them opposing 2024 election results.
- Voters' choice in upcoming elections could determine the fate of election certification.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) expressed concerns on Sunday regarding the possibility of Republicans refusing to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election if they maintain control of the House. In an interview on CNN's State of the Union, Jeffries highlighted that former President Donald Trump and his supporters are already preparing to contest the election outcomes. He emphasized that if Democrats regain the House majority, voters would not face the uncertainty of certification challenges. Jeffries's comments come amid ongoing debates about voting laws, which were relaxed in many states during the 2020 election due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Republicans have raised various concerns about these changes, alleging voter fraud and questioning the constitutionality of certain voting procedures. Notably, House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) has been vocal about her objections to Pennsylvania's voting laws, particularly regarding mail-in ballots and signature matching requirements. Despite these challenges, courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, upheld the legality of late-arriving ballots in Pennsylvania, and numerous legal challenges regarding voter fraud were dismissed post-election. Stefanik has stated that she would support certifying the 2024 election results if they are deemed "legal and valid." Trump, during a recent debate, echoed a similar sentiment, indicating he would accept the election results if the process is fair and legitimate.
