Hyundai is taking proactive measures to address the ongoing risk of car theft linked to a viral TikTok trend that demonstrated how to hot wire certain vehicle models. The company’s Vice President, Dave VandeLinde, announced that they have already provided software upgrades to 1.6 million customers to enhance vehicle security. Despite these efforts, VandeLinde noted that some of these cars have become tools for professional criminals, akin to "burner phones," used to facilitate other crimes. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive solution, Hyundai has developed specific software packages tailored to each vehicle model and trim level. VandeLinde emphasized the complexity of integrating software into vehicles, likening it to a challenging construction project rather than a simple addition. In response to the theft issue, Hyundai has also fostered partnerships with over a thousand police departments nationwide, distributing steering wheel locks during safety events to help deter criminal activity. Hyundai's software clinics, which are free of charge, are designed to upgrade up to 800 cars daily. Customers can relax in an air-conditioned lounge while their vehicles are serviced, ensuring a quick and efficient process. VandeLinde highlighted the importance of reaching out to at-risk customers, particularly those who may rely on their vehicles as their sole means of transportation. Additionally, Hyundai's 840 dealerships across the country are also equipped to provide similar assistance to customers in need.
