Marylanders overwhelmingly back solar energy expansion amid rising bills

In Maryland, a recent UMBC poll conducted between February 11 and February 15, 2025, revealed significant support among residents for expanding various energy sources. Out of 803 adults surveyed, a majority responded positively regarding alternative energy sources, highlighting the growing concern over energy prices. The poll demonstrated that 80% of respondents advocated for increased use of solar energy, whereas 74% favored natural gas, 70% preferred wind energy, and 68% supported waste-to-energy initiatives. These figures reflect the urgent need for more sustainable energy options as residents face rising energy costs. The alarming rise in energy bills has become a focal issue for many Marylanders. Reports indicate notable increases in utility bills, sometimes by as much as $200, prompting complaints among residents and business owners. The Baltimore City Council has recently engaged with Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) regarding these spikes, pushing for action to prevent further rate increases through state regulatory bodies. BGE attributed part of the rate hikes to distribution costs and associated expenses with programs like Empower Maryland, which focuses on energy efficiency. With these heightened costs impacting many households and businesses, the call for energy reform becomes increasingly urgent. In addition to energy concerns, the poll also explored healthcare issues within the state, revealing that 37% of participants expressed worries over the rising cost of care and insurance. This was a significant factor, given that many indicated avoiding medical care due to prohibitive costs. Only 12% of those surveyed related worries to access to healthcare services directly. These healthcare concerns are intertwined with those regarding energy, as both issues impact Marylanders' quality of life significantly. Overall, the results from the UMBC poll underscore the dual pressure faced by Maryland residents: rising energy costs alongside growing healthcare expenses. The emphasis on expanding renewable energy solutions like solar power implies a strategic shift towards sustainable practices in Maryland’s future policies. At the same time, legislative measures are concurrently being introduced to address these economic challenges, particularly in the climate and energy sector as well as in healthcare accessibility. Thus, there is a clear public desire for proactive measures that not only address rising costs but enhance overall quality of life in Maryland.
