Story

In a recent revelation, a patient discovered they had been misdiagnosed with diabetes, only to find out they actually have type 1.5 diabetes, also known as latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). This condition is characterized by the immune system attacking insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, leading to a progressive loss of insulin. Experts note that while LADA shares symptoms with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, it presents unique challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Kevin Peterson, vice president of primary care for the American Diabetes Association, explained that symptoms of LADA are often less pronounced than those of type 1 diabetes, which typically includes increased thirst and weight loss. Approximately 10% of adults with LADA are initially misdiagnosed as having type 2 diabetes, underscoring the importance of accurate testing. The lack of standardized autoantibody testing for newly diagnosed diabetes patients can lead to these misdiagnoses. Treatment for LADA can vary significantly from that of type 2 diabetes, as it may not respond to lifestyle changes or standard medications. Depending on the level of insulin production, patients may require insulin therapy similar to that of type 1 diabetes or a combination of insulin and other medications used for type 2 diabetes. Dr. Brian Burtch, an endocrinologist, noted that his practice encounters at least one case of type 1.5 diabetes each month, highlighting the condition's prevalence and the need for increased awareness among healthcare providers.
