Story

Following the lifting of evacuation warnings due to the Line Fire, animals from the Big Bear Alpine Zoo are returning home. Last week, approximately 45 animals were relocated to the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Palm Desert as a precaution against smoke from the wildfire, which has burned over 39,000 acres. The evacuation primarily affected animals in outdoor enclosures, while those housed indoors remained at the zoo. Mike Barnes, the Director of Animal Care and Health at the Living Desert Zoo, reported that the staff quickly prepared living spaces for the incoming animals. The process took a full day, and within 48 hours, various species, including skunks, raccoons, foxes, and several birds, were safely transported. The primary concern was for the animals most susceptible to smoke exposure, particularly the birds. On Thursday morning, 27 of the relocated animals began their journey back to Big Bear, with the remaining 18 scheduled for transfer later that day. This incident marks a repeat of a similar collaboration between the two zoos in 2002, when animals were also evacuated due to wildfire threats. The successful return of the animals highlights the effective response and cooperation between the zoos during emergencies. The animals were accompanied by their keepers, ensuring a smooth transition back to their original habitats, and reinforcing the commitment to animal welfare during crisis situations.
