Shark attack on Maui surfer severed leg at Waiehu Beach

On the morning of November 1, 2024, in Maui, Hawaii, a 61-year-old local surfer experienced a severe shark attack while at Waiehu Beach Park, a popular surfing destination known for its challenging waves. The attack occurred around 7 a.m. as the surfer, identified as Kenji Nonoka, was sitting on his board at a surf spot named 'Sand Piles.' A shark bit his leg, completely severing it just below the knee, resulting in critical injuries. Witness reports highlighted the panic and chaos of the moment, with other surfers promptly coming to his aid. Despite his severe injury, Kenji managed to swim partway back to shore before being assisted by fellow surfers. Once ashore, local police and emergency responders quickly arrived to apply first aid, including the use of tourniquets to control the heavy bleeding. His condition required transport to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he entered the ICU for further treatment.
