Pacific Green secures land for new energy park in New South Wales
- Pacific Green has acquired land in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, to build an energy park.
- The proposed facility will help store renewable energy and stabilize the grid, benefiting local energy prices.
- This move marks Pacific Green's expansion into New South Wales, contributing to their goal of a 10GWh development pipeline in Australia.
On December 3, 2024, Pacific Green, a notable player in the global battery energy storage industry, announced its entry into the New South Wales market by acquiring a parcel of land in Wagga Wagga. This strategic acquisition is positioned near the TransGrid's Wagga 330 kV substation, 16 km from the town, which is significant for enhancing the region's renewable energy capabilities. The planned energy park aims to store excess renewable energy and discharge it during peak demand, thereby bolstering local grid stability and potentially lowering energy costs for consumers. This development comes amidst a broader context of renewable energy projects in Australia. Wagga Wagga is recognized as a vital area for the national grid, hosting a concentration of renewable projects alongside HumeLink, which is one of the largest energy transmission projects underway. Once completed, HumeLink will facilitate the connection of renewable generation sources to the grid, exerting downward pressure on energy prices across the country. The announcement represents a pivotal moment in Pacific Green’s strategy to construct a 10GWh pipeline of battery energy parks across Australia. Joel Alexander, the Managing Director and CEO of Pacific Green Australia, emphasized the importance of diversifying storage locations to enhance the reliability and security of the national energy system. The company is also constructing similar projects in South Australia and Victoria, including the Limestone Coast North and West Energy Parks, which have capacities of 250MW. As Pacific Green continues to develop its energy parks, it aims to play a crucial role in accelerating Australia’s transition to renewable energy, addressing the country’s increasing demand for storage solutions, and ensuring a more sustainable energy future. The early stages of this project will involve collaboration with local stakeholders to ensure the energy park meets the specific needs of the Wagga Wagga community.
