Story

Nearly two months after the death of D'Vontaye Mitchell, a 43-year-old Black man, his family has reached a settlement with the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Milwaukee. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, along with his colleagues B’Ivory Lamarr and Will Sulton, announced the resolution following “good faith conversations” aimed at providing closure for Mitchell’s family. While the specific terms of the settlement remain confidential, the attorneys expressed satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing the importance of resolving the matter outside of court. The settlement announcement coincides with the legal proceedings against four hotel workers accused of Mitchell's death. Todd Erickson and Brandon Turner, former security guards at the Hyatt, along with Herbert Williamson and Devin Johnson-Carson, have been ordered to stand trial on murder charges. Each defendant faces a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison if convicted. Their next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday. Mitchell died on June 30 after a confrontation with security personnel outside the hotel. Witnesses reported that multiple guards restrained him, with some allegedly placing their knees on his neck and back while striking him. Video footage from the incident shows guards pushing Mitchell against the pavement. Following the incident, the involved security guards were initially suspended, but Hyatt later confirmed their termination and the intention to pursue criminal charges against them.
