Story

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A child in Allegheny County has been discharged from the hospital and is now recovering at home after being diagnosed with the Powassan virus, a rare disease transmitted by ticks. This case marks the first reported human instance of the virus in Allegheny County and the first in Pennsylvania for the year. Health officials are currently investigating northern areas of the county to determine if other ticks may carry the virus. The Powassan virus was previously detected in a small percentage of ticks in northern Allegheny County during 2021 and 2023. The child was hospitalized due to a fever and other related symptoms but has since been released and is recuperating at home. Health officials emphasize the importance of monitoring tick populations in the region. Powassan virus is transmitted through bites from infected black-legged ticks, which are also known to carry Lyme disease. While many individuals infected with the virus may not show symptoms, those who do can experience fever, headache, vomiting, and weakness. In severe cases, the virus can lead to serious health complications or even death. Currently, there is no vaccine or specific treatment for Powassan virus. Health authorities advise anyone who suspects they have been bitten by a tick to seek medical attention promptly.
