Miami tenants displaced by fire find new homes after motel stay

In June, a significant fire at the Temple Court Apartments in Miami displaced over 70 residents, including Felicia Fernandez, who lost nearly all her belongings. After three months of living in a motel, Fernandez was able to move into a new apartment at Sawyer's Walk in Overtown. This new residence offers her essential amenities such as a kitchen, bathroom, and closet, which she lacked during her motel stay. The transition to Sawyer's Walk was facilitated by the building's owners and the Atlantic Housing Foundation, who provided furniture and other necessities to the displaced tenants. Each resident is required to pay only 30% of their monthly income for rent, with the remainder covered by a Housing and Urban Development subsidy. This arrangement aims to alleviate the financial burden on those affected by the fire. Fernandez expressed her gratitude for the new living situation, highlighting the emotional toll of losing personal items like her savings, passport, and family photos. Despite the loss, she is excited about the new opportunities her apartment provides, including access to a swimming pool where she can spend time with her grandson. The management of Sawyer's Walk emphasized their commitment to helping those in need rather than maximizing profits. They believe that providing affordable housing options is crucial for the displaced residents, ensuring they have a safe and comfortable place to call home during a challenging time.
