Google Wallet users outraged over delay in state ID support for New Mexico

In the United States, Google Wallet has expanded its capabilities by adding support for New Mexico state IDs, becoming the sixth state to do so. This feature follows the previous addition of support for IDs from five other states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, and Maryland, the latter being the first to introduce support in December 2022. The rollout of New Mexico state ID support was confirmed in an announcement made in August, indicating that this functionality would be available in the coming months. The inclusion of state IDs within Google Wallet allows users to store their identification digitally, streamlining processes that require ID verification. To set up the New Mexico state ID within Google Wallet, users must capture images of the front and back of their physical ID, along with a brief video of their face for identity verification purposes. This data is transmitted to the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division for review. A notification will inform the user once their state ID is available for use within the app, along with an email confirmation from the state agency. This setup aims to make it convenient for residents of New Mexico to access their IDs while also ensuring the security of personal information during the verification process. The digital ID can be shared for verification through Bluetooth technology or by scanning a QR code. Although Google Wallet offers a modern equivalent of carrying an ID, individuals are still required to carry their physical state ID as the digital version does not eliminate that necessity. The system also prioritizes user comfort and privacy, allowing users to review which personal elements they wish to share when utilizing their Google Wallet ID for identification purposes.
