- The DWP estimates that 880,000 pensioners in the UK are missing out on Pension Credit, which is more valuable than the axed Winter Fuel Payment.
- Outreach efforts have proven to be more effective in increasing claims than general awareness campaigns, with significant financial boosts reported for some households.
- The DWP is actively encouraging pensioners to check their eligibility and apply for Pension Credit, emphasizing the importance of timely claims.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) estimates that around 880,000 pensioners in the UK are not claiming Pension Credit, which is significantly more beneficial than the recently discontinued Winter Fuel Payment. This situation arose following a government policy change that primarily affected pensioners not receiving certain benefits, including Pension Credit. As a result, many eligible individuals are missing out on financial support during the winter months. Rachael Walker from Policy in Practice highlighted that targeted outreach efforts are proving to be more effective than general awareness campaigns in increasing the uptake of Pension Credit. Between January and August, 73 households experienced a substantial increase in their annual Pension Credit income, totaling £232,326, along with qualifying for £14,600 in winter fuel payments. This indicates the potential financial impact of claiming these benefits. Local authorities, such as Neath Port Talbot council, are actively working to identify and assist pensioners who may qualify for these benefits. Simon Knoyle, a cabinet member for social justice, expressed optimism about the initial outreach efforts and emphasized the importance of continuing to find eligible individuals who have yet to claim. The DWP has launched a Pension Credit Week of Action, collaborating with various partners to encourage pensioners to check their eligibility. They stress the importance of submitting claims by December 21 to receive this year's winter fuel payment, urging those who believe they may qualify to take action and potentially improve their financial situation during the winter season.
