Idaho Springs to Enhance Tourism with New Gondola

Idaho Springs is set to witness a significant transformation with the installation of the Mighty Argo Cable Car, adjacent to the historic Argo Gold Mill and Tunnel. Mary Jane Lovelie, Owner/Partner of the Argo Milling Tunnel and the cable car project, expressed optimism about the development, stating, "It's happening." The project faced delays due to a $4.5 million theft linked to a scam, which remains under investigation. Lovelie emphasized the positive impact this project will have on the community and the state of Colorado, highlighting the long-held vision of local residents. Mayor Chuck Harmon echoed Lovelie's enthusiasm, acknowledging the mixed feelings surrounding the installation. He noted that while the cable car could boost the local economy by attracting tourists, it also raised concerns about potential traffic increases. Harmon hopes the project will enhance the town's appeal, similar to the Georgetown Loop railroad, without fundamentally altering its character. He believes that the cable car will encourage visitors to explore Idaho Springs' unique shops and restaurants. Despite community apprehensions regarding traffic, Harmon reassured residents that careful planning has been undertaken to mitigate any negative impacts. He emphasized the importance of tourism in revitalizing Idaho Springs, which has transitioned from its mining roots. "The gold is now getting folks to come and experience this area of Colorado," he stated, expressing hope that the Mighty Argo Cable Car will become a cherished attraction for both locals and visitors alike.
