Slate Auto is a new startup aiming to revolutionize the electric vehicle market by introducing a minimalist electric pickup truck named the Slate Truck. The unveiled prototype focuses on essential features, including a single rear-mounted electric motor that delivers 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, achieving rear-wheel drive with an acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in about eight seconds. This unique approach contrasts sharply with the high-priced offerings typically dominating the industry. Production is announced to start in Indiana, with the expected delivery of units in late 2026. The Slate Truck caters to budget-conscious consumers with its base model set at an affordable price of $20,000, aimed specifically at making electric trucks accessible to a wider audience. An interesting aspect of its design is the modularity, allowing customers to customize their vehicles. Customers can transition the Slate Truck from a two-seater to a five-seat SUV by using an add-on kit that includes rear seats and safety features like airbags and a roll cage. This build-it-your-way philosophy has the potential to attract both everyday drivers looking for practicality and automotive enthusiasts drawn to customization. In terms of performance, customers can choose between two battery options: a standard 52.7 kWh battery offering an estimated range of 150 miles, or an optional 84.3 kWh battery improving the range to up to 240 miles. Charging flexibility is another highlight, with the vehicle equipped with an 11 kW onboard AC charger and the capability of fast DC charging at up to 120 kW. This allows for a significant recharge—from 20% to 80%—in approximately half an hour. The Slate Truck also boasts practical hauling capabilities, with a maximum payload capacity of 1,433 pounds and a towing capacity of up to 1,000 pounds. As market demand shifts towards affordability and practicality, the arrival of this truck could mark an important moment in the ongoing evolution of electric vehicles, potentially redefining what consumers expect from electric pickups and stimulating further competition in the industry.
