Detainees report inhumane treatment and neglect in South Florida ICE centers

In recent reports, detainees in South Florida are subjected to severe conditions across multiple immigration detention facilities. A coalition of human rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, documented excessive overcrowding, inadequate medical care, and degrading treatment at the Krome Detention Center, Federal Detention Center Miami, and the Broward Transition Center. Many detainees reported being held in frigid conditions without proper bedding, while medical neglect led to dire health situations, affecting detainees significantly. Among the numerous allegations, Harpinder Chauhan, a former detainee, described being shackled for extended periods without food, water, or access to proper hygiene. He recounted an instance where he and other detainees were forced to eat with their hands tied behind their backs, likening the experience to eating "like dogs.” The report revealed serious issues including denied medical help for chronic conditions such as diabetes and asthma, along with other reported incidents of mistreatment and neglect. The report highlighted that many individuals detained are not violent offenders, yet they are being treated under circumstances that violate basic human rights.
